Bugs in Your Marimo Tank? Don't Panic. (Seriously.)

Bugs in Your Marimo Tank? Don't Panic. (Seriously.)

Summer is here.

Warmer weather means more life... including the tiny, mysterious creatures that sometimes decide your Marimo tank is a great place to hang out.

Little worms. Tiny bugs. Random things that appear out of nowhere.

First of all:

If your Marimo is still green, it's healthy.

That's the only thing we really care about.

Almost nothing living in your tank is actually dangerous to a healthy Marimo.

You know what's actually dangerous?

Heat.

Leave your Marimo in a hot car, on a sunny windowsill, or let the water get too warm—and that's the real killer. Heat turns beautiful green Marimo into sad yellow Marimo.

The bugs?

Mostly just annoying.

Our Favorite "Crazy" Solution

Ready for the weird part?

Wash everything.

Seriously.

  • Your tank

  • The glass decorations

  • The Marimo itself

Use either:

  • diluted hand sanitizer, or

  • diluted Clorox solution.

Yes.

We actually said that.

No, don't soak your Marimo in it.

Just give everything a quick clean, rinse extremely well with fresh water, and put your Marimo back into clean water.

That's it.

Marimo are surprisingly tough.

Those tiny worms?

Not so much.

Most of them won't survive what your Marimo easily can.
